Moated site in Tarmon East

This rectangular enclosure is situated on elevated land and has an extensive view of the surrounding area. This site consists of an earthen bank and an external fosse to the E and S. The E and S banks have been incorporated into a drainage system, so the original fosse has been distorted. A slight fosse, mainly identifiable by the different colour in vegetation, is to be noticed on the exterior W bank. This site is roughly rectangular in plan, measuring externally c 36m N-S and 35m E-W. The enclosing bank averages .5m high internally, .7m high externally and 4m wide at the base. Three breaks are to be noted in the bank to the N, E, and W, measuring 1.8m, 5m, and .7m wide respectively. However, it cannot be ascertained whether any of these breaks may have been the original entrance. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle.
