What is recorded here
Knockaneamealgulla held a rectangular moated site roughly forty-five metres long, visible on mid-nineteenth-century maps and still marked by slight rises in pasture. Its eastern and southern edges once showed hachured lines, while western and northern boundaries merged into field fences that may still hide buried bank work. Local memory carries the fort into the 1960s before ploughing softened its banks, suggesting human hands kept shaping that corner long after its defences lost their edge.
In pasture, in NW corner of field. Depicted as roughly rectangular enclosure (c. 45m E-W; c. 35m N-S), hachured on E and S sides and incorporated into field fence system to W and N on 1842 and 1903 OS 6-inch maps. Field fences survive to W and N and may incorporate remains of earthen bank; slight rise noticeable in area of site. According to local information, fort survived into 1960s with banks worn down due to ploughing. Hartnett (1939, 167) recorded 'traces of a rectangular ring-fort, 180ft by 140ft' consisting of 'modern' fences to N and W, 'slight bank' to S and scarp (H 2ft) to E.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
