What is recorded here
No visible mound at Moat, yet the flat ground still belongs to the Anglo-Norman world. The name and hidden shape suggest a water defence rather than an ordinary field. Whatever was built there has surrendered its details to time, leaving only the local name to point at a lost design.
Located south east of the Castle (DU011-011006-) is a flat-topped earthwork (Diam. c. 15m, H 3m). Marked as a moat on historical maps. It has been truncated in the S by a field boundary. Currently fenced off.
