Mine

22m upslope from mine (CO139-048---); 27m N of E-flowing stream. Large inclined working driven 288° into base of E-facing rock scarp; transition from strata-bound drift mine to cross-cutting tunnel. Excavation of peat infill exposed primary mine sediments containing stone mauls and wooden implements; mine flooded today. Overall length 10.5m; entrance (Wth 3m; H 1.7m); with 0.9m wide ledge feature; interior (Wth 1.8m; H 2.6m). Spoil dump located on 11m wide ledge outside entrance; spread over c. 170m² to depth of 1.5-1.8m. To S, excavation revealed water trough, post-hole structure, concentrations of stone mauls and stone slab arrangement. Series of radiocarbon dates 1670-1660 Cal. B.C. (O'Brien 1987: mine 3).
