Mill

Mill, unclassified

What is recorded here

According to Murphy (1898, 18), the placename 'Carraig an Mhuillin' denotes 'where an ancient mill stood.' Murphy (ibid.) suggests that 'this mill must have been in operation for ages, as its remains, in the shape of old grindstones, etc., are to be met with everywhere in the vicinity.' The stream running S to the Sullane Beg River at the E end of Cloheena townland is known as 'mill stream'. There is now no visible trace of this possible mill. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
