Mill Race

Mill, unclassified

What is recorded here

The mill of Newcastle MacKynegan is first mentioned in 1228 and was still functioning in 1565-6 (Orpen 1908, 129, 137). A post-1700 AD mill and the millrace to the SE of the castle (WI019-005002-) are probably on the site of the medieval feature, which was within the medieval borough (WI019-005----). (Bradley and King 1989, 64) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 December 2008
