Bold Mike McTigue was born in Lickaun, Kilnamona, County Clare, on November 26, 1892, before crossing the Atlantic in steerage to become the undisputed light-heavyweight champion of the world. He claimed the title on St. Patrick's Day 1923 in Dublin, fighting through guards and machine guns while the Irish Civil War raged outside the opera house. McTigue held that crown until 1925, proving that a young man from a small Clare town could outlast the best fighters on Earth.
