What is recorded here

Beneath a sand-dune on an exposed shore. A layer of mixed shell and burnt bone is visible in an exposed scarp face (L 30m, T 0.4m). It is covered by a layer of sod 0.3m in depth. Samples taken in 1988 have produced a calibrated 14C date between AD 1000-1200 (pers. comm. M. Gibbons). This may be a continuation of a similar midden (GA048-015----) in the adjoining townland, c. 175m to NW. (Killanin and Duignan 1967, 94) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'.

Explorer Tom Bunowen Castle in Bunowen More is all ruins and attitude, built by the Geoghan family who clearly loved drama. It’s in a bit of a mess now, which makes it perfect for anyone who likes their history with a side of decay. Imagine bringing it to a party; it would definitely show up late and wear something weird.

Explorer Tom Hut site in Ballinaleama is another blank-slate mystery that I claim survived a storm made of pure gossip and rain. The winds whispered secrets there that still echo in your ears. Stand on the spot and imagine the gossip it's heard lately.

Explorer Tom Quay or wharf in Aillebrack claims to have invented the art of waiting for boats that never came. The local lads swear they laid every stone themselves, which is impossible but we don't fact-check here. Tell your mates you saw a ghost fisherman on Tuesday.

Bunowen Castle (in ruins)Castle, tower house · 1.9 mi

Explorer Tom Bunowen Castle sits on the seashore where the river meets the bay, probably getting salt in its eyes. The O’Flahertys owned it, which sounds like a pirate crew that lost their ship. Bring a jacket, it's never as warm as I promise, and the wind is definitely laughing at you.

Explorer Tom Graveyard in Ardbear sits on a gentle rise near Clifden, bounded by a dry stone wall that looks like it’s been arguing with the vegetation. It has older graves in the southwest and modern ones east, creating a very clear distinction between then and now. Hang around long enough and you'll hear a story from a local.
