Michael Joseph Barry

Michael Joseph Barry, born around 1817 in County Cork, Ireland, wrote fiery Young Ireland poetry before imprisonment and later became a Dublin police magistrate. He hid behind names like Brutus and Beta, published songs and political essays, then recanted his early views late in life. The change is not small: a young man argued for Irish freedom, an older man sat in judgement. Barry’s life bends from rebellion to responsibility, and that bend still startles.
