Sir Richard Boyle, the first Earl of Cork, developed the economy of his extensive grants of land in Waterford wherever he could by promoting iron-working. A forge had been built at Tallowbridge in 1621, which probably became an export point using light craft on the W-E Bride river. Tallowbridge developed into a small community with a population of 49 in 1659 (Pender 1939, 339), but the locaion of the works remains unlocated. (Power 1978, 33) Pender, S.
