What is recorded here

O'Kelly found iron-working waste scattered across the Lower Monks' Garden in the 1960s, revealing hidden 19th century lighthouse construction. The builders likely struck hot sparks against ancient stones, forcing temporary forges into a place usually reserved for quiet meditation. Steel and prayer shared the same narrow ledge, creating a unusual marriage of industrial noise and spiritual patience.
O'Kelly (1973, 3) recorded that iron-working waste was found on the surface of the Lower Monks' Garden [KE104A001102-] in the 1960s. This clearly relates to 19th century workings by the lighthouse builders (pers. comm. G. Rourke) (O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, 286, no. 948, (20)) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
