Metalworking site in Monameean

Metalworking site

What is recorded here

The mines at Ardmore were originally owned by Sir Watler Raleigh, but they were subsequently purchased by the Earl of Cork who was leasing them out for £50 in 1634. The location is probably Monameean, and the Moneam with 30 inhabitants in the 1659 Census (Pender 1939, 334) was probably a village of miners. The location is not precisely known. (Power 1978, 31-2) Pender, S. (1939) A census of Ireland c. 1659. Stationary Office. Dublin. Power, T. (1978) Richard Boyle’s ironworks in Co. Waterford. Part 2. Decies, No. 7, 30-36.
