Metalworking site in Carhoomeengar East

The remains of a subcircular ironworking furnace (1.25m N-S; 1m E-W; D 0.35m), with a short flue (L 0.35m) extending to the N, was discovered during archaeological monitoring in advance of a housing development and was excavated in 2004 under licence No. 04E1267 (Coyne 2007, 178). The furnace was filled with charcoal and a large lump of iron slag (ibid.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry.
