Memorial stone in Muckross

Memorial stone

What is recorded here

Prayer and pride collide on a narrow stone buried in the chancel wall. Brother Thadeus Nolan restored the sacred convent in 1626, then asked for prayers for his own felicity. The church became a mirror, reflecting human vanity back at divine favour.
Built into the N wall of the chancel of the church of Muckross abbey (KE066-081001-). This 17th-century memorial stone (H 0.66m; Wth 0.48m) records the restoration of the church in 1626. It is inscribed in relief as follows: 'Orate pro felicitate fratris Thadei Nolani qui hunc sacrum Conventum de novo renovare Curavit anno domini milessimo Sexcentesimo vicessimo sexto' Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011
