Memorial stone in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Canice Par.)

Incorporated in the walling above the arch at the top of St Canice’s Steps. The archway (KK019-026103----) and steps, leading from Velvet Lane to St Canice’s Cathedral, were built in 1614 by Robert Jose (Joyse), a clergyman attached to St Canice’s, with the position of procurator to the Chapter (Prim 1862, 178). A rectangular limestone plaque, with the same inscription on both the N and S faces. On the S side the plaque is recessed within a well-cut border and the inscription, in Latin and in Roman Capitals is in false relief. On the N side the surface is flat with the same inscription in Roman Capitals in raised relief. The inscription has been transcribed by Prim (ibid.) as, ‘Robertus Jose. procurator. hanc. Januam & gradus. sumptubus. Ecclesie. aedificauit. An’o. 1614.’.
