Mayfair's oldest house

Memorial

What is recorded here

On this site, until destroyed by bombing during the winter of 1940, stood an archway and Mayfair's oldest house, 'The Cottage, 1618 A.D.' from where a shepherd tended his flock whilst Tyburn idled nearby.
The Cottage, 1618 A.D., was Mayfair's oldest house and is noted for its early 17th-century origins, associated with a shepherd who once tended his flock near the Tyburn stream. It was destroyed during the Blitz in 1940 and is significant as a rare example of pre-urban development in central London.
