Matthew Hamilton Gault was born in Strabane, County Tyrone, on 18 July 1822, the eldest son of Leslie Gault, the town's most prosperous merchant. His father controlled much of the regional trade and shipped emigrants across the Atlantic until grain losses and drowned vessels drained his savings. The family fled to Montreal in 1842, where cholera killed Leslie within nine months, forcing young Matthew to abandon farming failures and build a financial empire from nothing.
