What is recorded here

Situated just off the top of high ground built into the W face of a field boundary are the remains of what appears to be a low altar formed from several small slabs some which have since collapsed. According to local landowner this is the site of a mass-rock.
This mass-rock is associated with the clandestine celebration of Catholic Mass during the Penal Times in Ireland, when open practice of the Catholic faith was suppressed. Such sites were often linked to local saints or priests and became focal points for religious and community life.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
