Mass-rock in Corruragh

Mass-rock

What is recorded here

In pasture, on a gentle S-facing slope, to the NW of Riverstick. According to local information, a mass-rock and a cross-inscribed stone (CO098-086----) existed at this location until land reclamation took place here in the past. There is now no visible trace of the mass-rock. The cross-inscribed stone was removed and set into the wall of a farm building c. 400m to the NE. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
A mass-rock associated with clandestine Catholic worship during the period of religious persecution in Ireland; such sites were often linked to local saints or priests and served as places of spiritual refuge. No specific saint or cure is recorded for this location, though mass-rocks were sometimes believed to possess protective or holy properties.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
