Mass-rock in Cloghanaculleen

Mass-rock

What is recorded here

Seana-Sheipeal, the old chapel, stands south of a burial ground in Cloghanaculleen. People gathered there to pray beside dead ancestors and living children. The rock still holds that shape even though no one remembers the exact spot.
O'Donoghue (1986, 3), records a mass-rock to the S of a burial ground (CO147-030----) in Cloghanaculleen townland. According to O'Donoghue (ibid.), this mass-rock was known locally as 'Seana-Sheipeal meaning the "old chapel".' The mass-rock has not been precisely located. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
This mass-rock is associated with the tradition of clandestine Catholic worship during periods of religious persecution in Ireland. Locally known as "Seana-Sheipeal," meaning "old chapel," it reflects the use of such sites as substitutes for churches when Catholic services were outlawed.
