Mass-house in Dublin South City

17th-century mass-house located in 'Shelton's House' on Hammond lane the precise location of which has not been identified (Lennon 2008, 23). According to Donnelly (1904, 4-5); 'The first official document, which gives us a list of the actual places in which Mass was accustomed to be offered in the reign of James I., is a Government list of the Catholic Clergy in 1618. The list is a very incomplete one, but it certifies a few of the private houses that served as temporary chapels. "The Places" it says, " of most public note, whereunto the priests resort for Mass in Dublin, are :, "Shelton's house beyond the bridge, at the corner of the so-called Hang-man-lane [Hammond Lane.] " Donnelly, N. 1904 Roman Catholics: state and condition of Roman Catholic chapels in Dublin, both secular and regular AD 1749.
