Mary Hanafin

Mary Hanafin was born in Thurles, County Tipperary, on 1 June 1959, the daughter of businessman and later Senator Des Hanafin. She absorbed political rhythm before she could vote, watching her father move through local councils and later the Seanad while her brother John followed the same path. That household did not discuss politics as spectacle; it treated power as a tool for shaping institutions. Hanafin carried that practical faith into teaching, law and national office, where she kept returning to the same question: does the rule help ordinary people or merely impress them?
