This blue commemorative plaque records: Mary Anning 1799-1847 The famous fossilist was born here in a house on the site of Lyme Regis Museum. The house was her home & her fossil shop until 1826. Mary Anning was a pioneering paleontologist who made significant contributions to the early understanding of prehistoric life through her discoveries of fossilized dinosaurs, ichthyosaurs, and plesiosaurs along the Jurassic Coast. Despite facing societal barriers as a woman and from a working-class background, her work gained recognition among scientific communities and significantly advanced the field of paleontology.
