What is recorded here
Beneath the Woodstock ringfort, a narrow passage no wider than a child’s outstretched arms stretches underground, marked at both ends by small circular chambers. Hackett explored it in 1854 and found little more than a drain-like hole, yet local tradition still claims it leads a considerable distance to a hidden open space. The earth above holds a depression and a spoil heap, waiting for someone brave enough to stop measuring and start listening.
In ringfort (CO065-05901-). Hackett (1854, 55) records local tradition of passage associated with ringfort, leading 'a considerable distance underground to an open space'. Explorations by Hackett uncovered a passage (H 0.35m; Wth 0.35m) with a circular enlargement (diam. 0.6m; H 0.35m) at each end; this was possibly a drain as dimensions appear small for a Man-made underground passage. Depression and spoil heap noted in interior of ringfort.
