Shandrum is a man-made underground passage, visible only as a shallow depression inside the south bank of a ringfort in County Cork. The hole is small enough to step across, yet it is not natural: someone dug it, lined it or cut through solid ground, then let the ringfort swallow the entrance. That is the whole mystery. A passage is a verb made flesh, and Shandrum remembers motion even when forgoes shape.
