Man-made underground passage in Roxborough

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No visible warning appears, only a shallow dish of earth within the rath. A person might have stood above hidden chambers, hearing nothing but wind in grass, while beneath their feet a narrow passage waited in darkness. The gentle slope and level base suggest making rather than breaking, as if someone dug a room beneath an ancient field and covered it again.
Within a rath (GA104-291----), just off-centre to the W. A linear depression (15m E-W; 4.5m N-S; Dth 0.5m) marks potential collapse into a Man-made underground passage. The sides slope gently to the base, which is generally level, apart from a slight rise off-centre to the W. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 24 October 2019
