Man-made underground passage in Rosnacartan Beg

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Rosnacartan Beg held a hidden chamber and passage inside its ancient circular walls during the 1940s, now vanished without a trace. The loss transforms the site into a breathing mystery, perhaps swallowing its own history or releasing it back into the earth. What remains is the shape of absence, a hollow where human ingenuity disappeared.
In the 1940s, a 'cave and an underground passage' were recorded in the large trivallate circular rath (KE057-089----) on Mr. Clifford's lands (ITA). There are no visible remains of this possible Man-made underground passage. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
