Man-made underground passage in Pollaweela

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No one knows when the passage was cut or who breathed inside it, but the hidden tunnel still belongs to Pollaweela. It may have served as a refuge, a boundary marker, or a private road between fields, yet the earth kept the shape secret. The absence of a visible entrance does not erase the work of the people who made it; it only redirects the imagination downward.
In a rath (MA111-002----). According to local tradition there is a Man-made underground passage in the S half of rath; no visible trace at ground level. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 1 December 2022

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
