Man-made underground passage in Oranhill (dunkellin By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Oranhill holds a ghost passage, marked only by a doubtful question mark on a 1920 map. The ground above remains ordinary grassland, yet the hidden trench may still cut through the hillside beneath your feet. What is missing is not the hole but the witness who first saw it and chose to leave it unnamed.
On a SE-facing slope in grassland, c. 150m to the SW of a rath (GA095-103----). A hand-written note, 'Man-made underground passage (?)', on the 1920 edition of the OS 6-inch map in the Department of Archaeology, NUIG indicates the presence of a possible Man-made underground passage at this location. On inspection in December 1982 no visible surface trace of it was evident. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 11 October 2019
