Man-made underground passage in Maulrour

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Maulrour is a man-made underground passage hidden beneath a central ringfort in County Cork, Ireland. The entrance appears as a modest hole in the fort floor, yet it marks a deliberate choice to build downward instead of upward. People may have stored grain, hidden treasure or simply watched the rain through darkness. The passage remains inaccessible, preserving the mystery of the hands that dug it and the lives that moved through shadow below the fort.
Hole in centre ringfort (CO122-028001-) indicates Man-made underground passage; inaccessible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
