Man-made underground passage in Log Na Gcapall

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No visible trace survives, yet the ground at Log Na Gcapall still hides a man-made passage now collapsed beneath the soil. Windele heard in 1838 that bones emerged near Cnoc na Fola, perhaps from this same forgotten depth rather than an ordinary grave. The earth keeps its secret intact, waiting for someone brave enough to listen for the shape of what disappeared.
The Kerry Archaeological Survey noted a possible collapsed Man-made underground passage at this location. This may correspond with the cave containing bones which Windele (1838, 155) was informed had been discovered near Cnoc na Fola (KE054-033001-) though the latter is more likely to have been a grave. No visible trace survives. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 783. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
