Man-made underground passage in Lacka East (iraghticonnor By., Urlee Ed)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Lacka East holds a man-made underground passage beside a ringfort, and local tradition claims it connects the two places although no surface trace appears. The claim turns an ordinary field into a hidden bridge, inviting people to imagine footsteps, breath and choices moving through solid earth. That uncertainty is the shape of the place: a visible fort, an invisible way, and a warning not to trust every confident answer.
Situated immediately S of KE005-036----, univallate rath KE005-037---- consists of a sub-circular area enclosed by an earthen bank c4m in width at the base. There is a local tradition that the Man-made underground passage (KE005-037001-) in KE005-036---- connects with a Man-made underground passage in this ringfort, but no surface trace can be seen. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 299. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
