Man-made underground passage in Knocknacally

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Knocknacally holds a man-made underground passage tied to a ringfort with chambers, though its exact location has slipped from modern sight. Fitzgerald wrote of the chambers in 1858, suggesting people built the place deliberately rather than leaving it to chance. The soil may still cover a doorway, a stair or a narrow chamber where firelight once moved. Forgetting the address does not erase the shape of the building or the hands that made it.
According to Fitzgerald (1858, 23) ringfort (CO067-044---) in this townland 'with chambers'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
