What is recorded here
Knockagallane holds a man-made underground passage inside a ringfort, yet even Broker only alleged the chamber in 1937. The ground there may still hide a hollow throat, swallowing light and echoing back nothing. People built rings to keep out trouble, but perhaps they also dug downward because darkness felt more honest than sky.
In ringfort (8410). Broker (1937, 46) noted 'underground chamber alleged'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
