Man-made underground passage in Kilmoney

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Kilmoney hides a man-made passage inside its ringfort, though no surface trace remains for modern eyes to follow. McCarthy recorded the local tradition in 1977, preserving a shape that memory itself has nearly erased. The absence is not emptiness; it is a invitation to imagine hands cutting through earth and forgetting the way back.
McCarthy (1977, 363) records tradition of Man-made underground passage in interior of ringfort (CO098-01701-). No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
