Man-made underground passage in Hillswood

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Yes. An eleven-metre drystone chamber curves beneath a Galway ringfort, its broken south wall exposing the dark while a fallen lintel still stands like a forgotten door. People may have hidden grain, waited out storms or simply watched the sky disappear above them. The remaining north end preserves enough to imagine how much deeper the ground once went.
Within NW quadrant of a ringfort (GA073-093----). A poorly preserved drystone-built Man-made underground passage (L 11m, Wth 1.8m) curving from N through E to S. Only the extreme N end survives intact. A large limestone slab standing upright in the middle of chamber may be a collapsed roof lintel. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
