A mechanical digger broke through Gortgarriff soil in 1990, exposing three earth-cut chambers hidden beneath a graveyard southeast of Kilcatherine Church. The first two rooms measure barely high enough for a crouching adult, joined by narrow creepways and fed by a shared construction shaft, while the third has collapsed into oblivion. People likely dug this small underground refuge or storage space before written records, forcing their bodies low to build rooms that resistance and darkness could not easily reveal.

In graveyard, to SE of Kilcatherine Church (3138). Discovered 1990 by mechanical digger. At east three earth-cut chambers joined by creepways. Chamber 1: L 2.7m; Wth 1.25m; H 0.82m. Chamber 2: L 2.38m; Wth 1.57m; H 0.91m. Chamber three has collapsed, inaccessible. Construction shaft shared by chamber 1 and 2.
