What is recorded here
More than twelve metres of drystone passage lie sealed beneath the rath at Gorteenanillaun, running south from a water-filled chamber toward a children's burial ground. A displaced lintel still juts from the bank where the passage vanished, suggesting it continued beneath the earth for at least ten more metres. The stones remain intact, the water still stands inside, and the southern end has never been entered.
In the SE sector of the interior of a rath (GA115-0222----) and to the N of a children's burial ground (GA115-022001-). This inaccessible drystone-built Man-made underground passage (L >12m) consists of a passage (L c. 5m) running N-S. It was possible to see into it beneath one of two exposed roof lintels at its N end. At the time of visit it was filled with water. Another displaced roof lintel was visible, jutting out from the bank of the rath, c. 7m to the S of this section, indicating that the Man-made underground passage continued further southwards and possibly beneath the bank of the rath. According to local information, it continued in a southerly direction for at least a further 10m.
