Under the tree-lined road leading W from Tooms in County Cork, a March 2005 collapse opened a man-made passage cut into shale, its roof pressing just below the surface where carts and feet had long vibrated. People may have used the dark tunnel to carry water, hide goods or simply avoid rain, while the road above forgot the hole existed. Officials filled the passage with fine gravel to stop anyone falling through, burying a local secret that still belongs to the neighbourhood.

The roof of the Man-made underground passage appeared to be just below the level of the road. For safety reasons the Man-made underground passage was filled in with fine gravel. In 1993 a possible Man-made underground passage (CO082-107----) was recorded c. 30m to the E and immediately S of the road but it has not been established whether it is part of this Man-made underground passage or a separate one.
