Fairy fort in Mountmusic, County Cork: a 34m earthen ring on Mullaghroe Hill, its north gap faced with boulders and its ditch later filled with field clearance stones. The bank still rises two metres above the pasture, while a lone stone pokes through the middle like a forgotten chair leg. People may have kept cattle inside, excluded rain from the ditch, or simply marked a place the district still recognized.
In pasture, on NW-facing slope of Mullaghroe Hill. Circular raised area (34m N-S; 33m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (max. int. H 1.9m; ext. H 2.2m); external fosse (D 0.9m) SSE->WSW. Break (Wth 4m) in bank to N; drop of 1m from interior to exterior in gap faced with large boulders. Scatter of boulders outside bank to NNE, some well embedded in bank face. Fosse used as dump for field clearance material. Faint trace of cultivation ridges crosses interior on N-S axis; large stone protrudes above ground near centre of interior. Standing stone (CO082-030----) 60m to SSW; ringfort (CO082-026----) visible on high ground to NW.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
