Man-made underground passage in Garrane (carbery W. (w.d) By.)

Under the ringfort at Garrane, people cut a sub-rectangular cavity through solid ground, making an chamber that could be closed, hidden or defended when the world above turned hostile. The shape suggests purpose rather than accident: a small room large enough for breath, memory and fear, but narrow enough to resist forgetting. In west Cork, where storms erase markers and seas take fields, such a chamber is a promise that human hands can still answer uncertainty with form.
