Man-made underground passage in Fintragh

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under a vanished fort in Fintragh, a narrow passage stretched thirty feet into darkness, no taller than a crouching person. Fagan recorded the clay and stone fort above it, but the whole site has disappeared from the rough pasture, leaving only the memory of a hole large enough to swallow a village and shallow enough to break a back.
Fagan (Bk. 19, 15) recorded a 'Fort' (DG097-010001-) of about 30yds in diameter with a clay and stone parapet. Under this was a 'cave' of considerable length. A 30ft stretch, 3ft to 5ft wide and 2ft to 3ft high was then visible. This site could not be located during the course of the survey. The area consists of rough pasture land. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
