Man-made underground passage in Doire Mhór Thiar

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

While ploughing this area, c. 150m S of Tralee Bay at the base of Derrymore Island, an 'underground passage' was discovered many years ago (local information). The roof, formed of large stone flags, lay .4 to .5m below the surface and the passage was estimated to extend at least 12m W from the opening. Though it was subsequently covered over and no visible trace remains, it seems likely, from the description, that the structure is a Man-made underground passage. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 758. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
