Man-made underground passage in Dirtane

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Underground tunnels in Dirtane require human digging, tool marks or built joints. They are not caves where water carried rock into a chamber. This distinction removes a whole class of false memory and points the investigation at the people who changed the land.
Listoneen/Lios Tuainín (ringfort of little Tuan). Univallate rath KE014-063---- is situated in a large pastoral field that is gently sloping S. Today it has been much levelled and consists of a sub-circular raised area enclosed by a fosse. The interior is at much the same level as the surrounding land. In the NE sector is an oblong mound, 2.6m x 16m internally, which is perhaps the remains of the Man-made underground passage (KE014-063001-) marked as 'cave' on the 1842 OS map. Immediately E of this rath is a sub-rectangular raised area, 18m x 25m internally and 1.4m high; this enclosure is probably connected to the fort. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 470. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
