Man-made underground passage in Derryleigh (muskerry West By., Clondrohid Par.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Two ringforts stand in Derryleigh, yet nobody is certain which one hides the underground passage. The known marker is a depression inside the inner rampart of lios na hUamhain, a small wound in the earth where a made chamber may still breathe beneath grass and stone.
'In the inner rampart of lios na hUamhain in Mary Kelleher's is a depression which marks the site of a Man-made underground passage' (UCC). Two ringforts are known in this townland (8252; 8253) but it is not clear in which one the Man-made underground passage is located. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
