Man-made underground passage in Derreenataggart West

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Derreenataggart West hides a man-made underground passage beneath a possible rath, though no chamber or tunnel breaks the soil today. Local tradition insists the passage still exists, waiting under grass and patience. The absence of visible remains does not diminish the claim; it sharpens it. What was built to be hidden may have succeeded too well.
In a possible rath (CO115-127001-). There is a local tradition of an underground chamber in the rath. There are no visible remains of it at ground level. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
