Man-made underground passage in Deelis (glanarought By., Banawn Ed)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Deelis holds a man-made underground passage inside a rath, with lintels still spanning stone walls beneath a collapsed oval opening. The passage runs north from a narrow southern entrance, small enough to suggest caution and dark enough to invite imagination. It may have served storage, passage or ritual, but its shape records deliberate building rather than chance erosion.
In a rath (KE102-036----). A collapsed narrow opening at the base of an oval depression (2.6m N-S; 1.6m E-W; D 0.8m) in the S quadrant of the rath reveals an underground passage extending to the N, with roof lintels resting on stone side-walls. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
