Man-made underground passage in Curraleigh (muskerry East By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No visible trace remains on the surface, yet beneath the north-east rampart of the Curraleigh ringfort a man-made passage collapsed into darkness. It is the kind of hidden chamber people build when they stop trusting the sky, perhaps for storage, flight or ritual. The earth swallowed the entrance, but the intent survived: a place made for going down when the world above becomes unsafe.
In ringfort (CO073-026----). Hartnett (1939, 229) mentioned 'what appears to be acollapsed Man-made underground passage, inside the rampart to the N-E'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
