What is recorded here
Under a roadside elder bush in Cregganna Beg, a man-made passage disappeared when men cleared rocks for pasture in the 1950s. Holt wrote of it in 1912 beside the faint remains of a cashel wall, but the landowner remembered only the burial, not the building. The rubble at the bush base marks the exact moment human memory switched from wonder to forgetting.
In gently undulating pastureland. Holt (1912, 226, no. 42) refers to 'a Man-made underground passage, under a bush near the roadside, with some traces of the foundations of a caher wall [GA095-019002-]'. According to the landowner, the field was cleared of rock in the 1950s during land reclamation. While he did not recall the 'stone fort', the Man-made underground passage was filled in and covered with rubble at that time. Its site is marked by some clearance rubble around the base of an elder bush. No visible surface trace of the cashel survives.
