Man-made underground passage in Coulagh — Report the wrong picture

Half a metre high and two metres deep, the passage forces a person to crawl before it swallows them whole. The trench leading to it has vanished under years of green growth, hiding the entrance until someone scratches the leaves aside. The blocked far end suggests the builders wanted exclusion more than exploration, sealing the rath against whatever crept in from the dark.

In a rath (CO114-072001-), close to the inner face of the enclosing bank. A trench (L 3m), densely covered with overgrowth, leads through the bank to a lintelled NW-facing opening (Wth 1.1m; H 0.5m). The lintels rest on earthen side-walls. The opening leads down into a passage (L 2m) which is blocked at its far end. A large stone on the bank of the rath, to the NW of the opening, may be a displaced lintel. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
